Shoutbox
Hey guys
I have seen quite a few websites with a similar layout to this and was just wondering how hard (or useful) it would be to add a shoutbox.
All adds to the fun and quickposting to messages of people logged onto the site without having to pm everyone
Just a thought

Personally I'm a bit afraid it will encourage people to comment in normal posts less, but let's see. I also don't know if 10 messages will extend/expand the box a bit too much for visibility. I could adapt the number of shouts visible (to 5 for example).

I like it actually, but I can understand your concerns. I would also say that 5 shouts on display seems about right to me.
When you have done your homework, Wilgje, I keep forgetting to mention a weird error I started getting on the site. Quite often when opening a topic now, I get a weird layout ... no nice boxes or menu driven stuff ... just ugly looking Times New Roman font, and lists of links instead of the usual nice layout. Its still useable, but I dont really know whats up.

I have the same problem as Matzy, Wilgje. When I open a topic at work, it looks like the site suddenly goes into 'low bandwidth mode' / mobile phone mode. I don't have this problem at home.

Sounds like a problem where the CSS file (the file that tells the website what to look like) doesn't load. What browser do you use? Could you go to 'create new forum topic' and refresh, see if the problem still persists?

What do you mean with 'go to 'create new forum topic''? If I go into the Guests forum and click on 'New Topic' the page layout is fine. If I go back to here and refresh it's not fine.
The browser is IE 7.

Everything seems to load fine with Opera 10.01.
The only oddity I've noticed is that next to each entry in the shout box are 3 different icons, all with the same tooltip (Posted by XX at nnnn).

its not just creating new topics - it is simply viewing ones as well.
it happens in i.e and firefox, from memory.

The CSS not loading happened
The CSS not loading happened for Spitbeard too (on another page, a while ago). Unfortunately it seems to be an individual problem that is probably caused by
a) cache in the individuals browser being loaded (Among other browsers, Opera and Chrome save older versions of webpages to faster load the page - it saves time if you don't have to download all the images and css files again, is the general thought behind it - but that has the side effect that stuff that loaded incorrectly will still load incorrectly for some time)
b) connection issue to the website, like drawing the short straw when there are a lot of users on (and getting a time out on the CSS file only).

I've turned off advanced forum module (the thing making a different layout for the forum) because it didn't solve the issue it was intended to solve, and will make the site heavier to load.

Would it be possible to see the date/time with the shouts and not when you mouse over the icons?

I can ask around. Last night I took a second look but I can't find the spot where the shouts are themed (where I could place the timestamp tag)
