Ulduar-sign ups and our invite-system
This post might seem familiar to those who were here at the beginning of this year or a year before that. Please read it all as it is very important to the continuity of our guild that you do. (Click read more!)
Sign-ups for our 'official' guild raids are done by a home-grown invite system called the Ulduar Invite List (UIL).
The invite system was created when we started to do Karazhan runs to prevent the drama's other guilds were having (and still are) when it comes to group make up for raids. We didn't want to just invite the first 10 people that signed up - that would be unfair to those slower with signing up. We didn't want to put anyone in a position of 'selecting' raiders because that would be too prone to favouritism. In short, we wanted a fair system that would give everyone an equal chance to go to raids (or as equal as possible, because the raid organiser (currently Neti) still has to get a group that *works*), so the KIL (Karazhan Invite List) was developed. It has evolved into the NIL, the Naxxramas Invite List, and its current incarnation is the UIL, the Ulduar Invite List.
In this system, you sign up for the runs you are able to attend, and 24 hours in advance I will check our priority-system to see who has gone more often than others, giving the guildies who haven't been for a while priority. I won't go into the exact workings of our priority system here, as there is enough written about that here.
With the considerable influx of new guildies in the past few weeks we're now again at a point where we should be able to field a 10-man raid easily. Unfortunately this doesn't always seem to be the case. Sign-ups for runs have sometimes been uneven, resulting in cancellation of runs even though we had enough players online. People forget to sign up or wait until the very last day to sign up. Some people sign up for every single run, whereas others don't sign up at all. This makes organising raids not only stressful and difficult for us (as cancelling a raid sucks for guild morale, and we are kept 'in the dark' about whether it will fill up or not), but it also takes away the whole point of the UIL. In short, by not signing up, you're creating a 'first come, first serve' system out of a completely fair system. There should be rotation more than there is now.
So here is my request to you:
Please sign up for raids when you
- feel like going; and
- are able to go that night.
If you're in the top of the UIL you're certain that you will go. And even if you're not, chances are still very high that you can go, because most guildies don't sign up for every single raid.
Also sign up if you
- don't necessarily want to go; but
- are willing to fill the raid to assure it can continue
Just put a note with your sign-up that you sign-up as a backup, and I will give others priority if there are enough sign-ups.
In both cases please sign up as early as possible. It makes it much easier to see whether a run will actually fill up or not.
If there's anything regarding all of this that you have questions about/want to discuss please contact me in private (pm via the site, message in WoW or a whisper) and I'll make a list of things to address
Thank you

A few common misconceptions about the invite list system
Submitted by Neti on Mon, 14/09/2009 - 23:55.
People that aren't on the UIL yet, aren't allowed to sign up for events
They are, they just don't get first dibs for a spot when there's enough people that *are* on the UIL (because being undergeared increases the raid difficulty). It makes organising raids much easier for us if we're aware who is available in advance. If you're not on the UIL but do want so, please contact your class counsellor or Neti to discuss whether you're ready for it or what you need to do to become so.
There's 11 sign-ups! I don't need to sign up, I won't get a spot anyway.
By not signing up when you see there's already '11 signups', you're turning our fair rotation system into a 'first come, first serve' thing. Also, it is not possible for you to see what role someone signed up for; so there might actually be a spot free for you to DPS in even if you can't see it.
Also experience has shown that sometimes the line-up for a raid tends to drastically change due to people unexpectedly having to cancel. It's nice to have some backup sign-ups in that case. If you aren't that interested to come, but you want to come to fill the raid if needed, you can always sign up and put into the Comments that you sign up as 'backup'.
Guildie X was in the first run of this week so he will have priority for this run as well
Players who are in the first run of the week do not automatically qualify for consecutive runs. In all cases people higher on the UIL will have priority! So this means that if someone who has UIL-priority signs up for say Monday and not Wednesday, he will 'bump' another player from the Monday raid, who signed up for both runs and who already played on Wednesday. The reason for this rule is that we have quite a few of players who can't attend all the runs in one week, and this way it is still possible for them to not attend all runs and still be able to play.
Sometimes players who are high on the UIL only want to sign up for a later run if they don't 'bump' another player who was on a previous run, for instance because they feel there's a special circumstance that player 'earned' his spot on the follow-up run. In this case they can still freely sign-up for the follow-up run by putting in the sign-up note that they only want to sign-up under the provision that they don't bump other players.
